Harper Theater passed all necessary licensing and expects to begin showing movies on Friday, Jan. 18.
Tony Fox, president and CEO of ADF Capital, Ltd, who is renovating and operating the theater, said that the business passed licensing requirements for electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, structural, fire and construction. He did not have the physical license in his possession by Thursday afternoon but he expected it very soon.
“We should get the license by tomorrow but if we don’t we still have another full week to get it,” Fox said.
The theater initially expected to open before the holidays but red tape in the licensing process slowed things. The Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protections held off on issuing a license until the theater could prove it met all the necessary zoning requirements. A 60-day window was opened allowing the 20 registered voters who live within 200 feet of the theater, 5283 S. Harper Ct., to voice opposition. Fox said he was of the understanding these hurdles had all been cleared when Harper Theater went before the zoning board in December 2011.
Fox has booked movies to show next week but isn’t ready to say which ones will be showing.
