The fourth annual Martin Luther King Jr. Food Justice Weekend, “Schmita: Food Security and Sustainable Design in the Sabbatical Year and Beyond,” at K.A.M. Isaiah Israel is this weekend.
The weekend will feature education and advocacy programs, Friday night service and Sunday workshops on food, farming and sustainable design. On Saturday afternoon, the community will be invited to help expert growers and planners lay out a half-acre sustainable farm at an undisclosed location in or near Hyde Park.
K.A.M., 1100 E. Hyde Park Blvd., turned the synagogue’s lawn into a vegetable-producing garden in 2009 and began donating the produce to area food shelters and hot meal programs. They have since expanded their program and have this year donated more than two tons of fresh food.
