Booth booster gives $5M gift

John Edwardson, a member of the University of Chicago’s board of trustees and the former CEO of CDW, a Vernon Hills-based technology company, has donated $5M to the university’s School of Business.

Edwardson, who graduated with an MBA from the school in 1972, currently chairs its Council on Chicago Booth. He was the CEO of CDW until his retirement in 2012, following a career in the airline industry.

The money will support the school’s Social Enterprise Initiative, which promotes research surrounding social issues, such as how people who are poor make financial decisions. According to a statement from the university, the initiative encourages interest in the non-profit and for-profit sectors alike.

In the same statement, U. of C. President Robert Zimmer said the donation would “[help] support initiatives that simultaneously promote entrepreneurial innovation and social benefit.”
