The former Vivekananda Vedanta Society temple at 5421 S. Hyde Park Blvd. sold recently to a buyer who intends to use it as a single-family home.
The Vivekananda Vedanta Society, an order of monks and a branch of Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, India, left Hyde Park in 2005 to move into a larger monastery in Homer Glen township.
The home, a three-story building with eight bedrooms, six bathrooms and a backyard has been on and off the real estate market since the monks moved. It was most recently listed for sale in November asking for $650,000. The price dropped to $425,000 in late January.
Linda Broznowski, the @Properties real estate agent who sold the home, said the buyer intends to do a gut rehab and use it as a home for their family. Closing on the property is expected to finish in the next few weeks, she said.
