A barbeque and bourbon restaurant is the most recent one to sign a lease at Harper Court.
Porkchop will open its second location in a 2,500-square-foot space on the building’s first floor. The restaurant’s first branch, 941 W. Randolph St., serves barbeque with a focus on whiskey, bourbon and craft beer. The Hyde Park branch will serve Southern-inspired breakfast, lunch and dinner every day.
The University of Chicago said in a statement that Harper Court’s tenants have been signed with a commitment to Chicago-based businesses.
“The project’s commitment to Chicago-based retailers and restaurants, equivalent to 44 percent of the ground floor leases signed to date, delivers on the community’s vision articulated in the 53rd Street Vision Workshops. There the community expressed a preference for independently operated businesses, restaurants and entertainment venues. These uses have been thoughtfully matched with select national tenants that were identified by the community as desirable uses for the community-oriented project,” the university said in a press release announcing Porkchop.
Some Hyde Parkers have criticized the university for leasing to tenants without strong Hyde Park connections.
