The Big Easy, Hyde Park’s Cajun restaurant, closed its doors so that the owner Dave Shopiro can focus on his catering business.
“I am doing mostly catering right now, that’s the trajectory the business has been going in anyway,” Shopiro said.
Shopiro said his health problems and the struggles of running a catering business and a restaurant led him to decide to focus on just one business.
“We do a lot of stuff for the city and Chicago Public Schools and an increasing amount of stuff on the North Side, it keeps me as busy as I choose to be,” Shopiro said. “To be honest there’s a lot more upside and profitability in catering.”
The Big Easy previously was known as Jalapeno’s and Orly’s. Its most recent inspection, according to the City of Chicago, was on Oct. 15. It passed after correcting evidence of rodent and insect droppings, among other violations.
