Local youth win Golden Apples

Phoenix Steele, a student at Kenwood Academy High School, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave., and Amy Northrup, a student at the University of Chicago Lab High School, 1362 E. 59th St., are 2013 Golden Apple Scholarship recipients.

The Golden Apple Foundation is celebrating its 25th year in service as a non-profit organization known for recognizing excellent teachers for their hard work and providing professional development and financial assistance to students who are interested in teaching as a career.

As a part of the scholars program students will receive financial assistance for four years to attend one of 53 public and private universities in the state of Illinois, participate in professional development programs that include teaching internships and enhanced teacher preparation each summer and receive continual mentoring by Golden Apple Award-winning teachers. In order to participate, scholars must agree to teach for five years in an Illinois school of need, according to the foundation’s Web site.
