A body found in Lake Michigan was identified this afternoon as that of a local student reported missing last week. The medical examiner’s office said the body was missing University of Chicago student Austin Hudson-Lapore, according to the Sun-Times. U. of C. President Robert Zimmer also confirmed the identity of the body in an email to members of the U. of C. community.

The Chicago Police Department responded to reports of a body found in Lake Michigan near 39th Street this morning. A fisherman called 911 around 6:25 a.m., police News Affairs said. Police said they recovered the body of a white male of unknown age whose identification has not yet been confirmed.

The description of the clothing the body was wearing matched what Hudson-Lapore was last seen wearing.

The 20-year-old U. of C. student had finished his final exams on Wednesday evening. He is believed to have been traveling to the lakeshore to watch the aftermath of a large storm that came through the area the previous night.

A K9 unit traced his scent from his apartment building on the 5300 block of South Kimbark Avenue to lakeshore.
