Tom Phillips, who had been deputy chief with the University of Chicago Police Department, recently left to become police chief at Northern Illinois University.
Phillips was named NIU’s police chief on Wednesday, Aug. 28.
His initial salary will be $160,000 and extends through June 30, 2014.
NIU’s police force is under scrutiny by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other agencies after its former police chief, Donald Grady, was accused of mishandling the department. Grady was fired in February.
