A “Battle of The Blues” tribute to Muddy Waters will take place at The Checkerboard Lounge, 5201 S. Harper Ct., at 8 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 21.
All the proceeds from the event will go towards rescuing Waters’ Bronzeville home from the wrecking ball.
Admission is free and the winning band’s album will be sold at Hyde Park Records, 1377 E. 53rd St.
Waters lived at 4339 S. Lake Park Ave. for decades before he moved to the suburbs in the 1970s. One of his final performances before his death was at The Checkerboard Lounge, so his great-grandson, Steven Mckinley Monson, chose it as the venue for the fundraiser.
The house has fallen into disrepair and is slated for demolition.
Monson launched the fundraising initiative “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Blues” to help get the home out of foreclosure and brought back up to code.
Woody and the Chucks and Babybrutha will play, among others.
