Seminary Co-op Bookstore General Manager Jack Cella will be retiring Sunday, Oct. 13, after more than forty years at the store, now located at 5751 S. Woodlawn Ave.

Seminary Co-op Board of Directors Chair Bill Gerstein and Vice Chair Art Sussman revealed the news to bookstore members in a Tuesday e-mail sent on behalf of the board.

“There is truly no replacing Jack, and we will miss him greatly,” Gerstein and Sussman said in the e-mail.

“We will work quickly to identify interim leadership for the store while we conduct a national search for Jack’s successor,” the e-mail continued, adding that Nancy Maull, vice president of executive headhunter Isaacson, Miller will work on finding a replacement.

Cella will still advise the store in its selections, according to the e-mail.

The Seminary Co-op has been a Hyde Park fixture since its 1961 founding at 5757 S. University Ave., across the street from the University of Chicago Quadrangle. The store turned 50 in October 2012 and moved to its current location the next month.

The university’s Becker-Friedman Institute is currently being constructed at the Seminary Co-op’s previous site.
