Canter Middle School is seeking donations to send its final 8th grade class to Washington, D.C., in the spring.

“This is our last year, so we want to go out with a bang,” said Colleen Conlan, principal at Canter, 4959 S. Blackstone Ave., which Chicago Public Schools voted to close after this school year in an attempt to balance its budget. “We’re [President Barack Obama’s] neighborhood school so we wanted our students to learn more about where he is now and about the country’s history.”

Conlan said the school wants to take all 95 of its students on the three-day trip by airplane. The estimated cost is $800 per student. During the trip, students will see the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Einstein Memorial and the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and visit the Holocaust Museum, take the Alexandria Colonial Ghost Tour, visit Arlington National Cemetery, the Iwo Jima Memorial, the Pentagon, Capitol Hill, the Martin Luther King National Memorial, the Mount Vernon Estate, the Smithsonian Institution and take a group photo in front of the White House.

Call the school at 773-535-1410 for information on how to make a donation.
