Ray Elementary School is inviting the community to join them on Oct. 19 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Amanda’s Garden.
Amanda’s Garden, which is located at the northwest corner of the school, 5631 S. Woodlawn Ave., is a space dedicated to the memory of Amanda Carter, a Ray School second grader who was killed by a drunk driver in 1990. In May of 1990, Ray students, parents and community members started a wildflower garden in her memory. Every fall the community is invited volunteer for garden day, during which they pull weeds, plant bulbs and spread wood chips on the garden paths.
Ray teacher Chandra Garcia and Andy Carter will be there to assist volunteers. Shovels, rakes and other gardening tools will be provided and a light lunch will be served.
