Music Teachers of Hyde Park (MTHP) will kick off its 2013-2014 Artist Series today, at Blackstone Library, 4944 S. Lake Park Ave.

This year’s program features seven concerts by nine music instructors performing on piano, clarinet, viola and flute. Performances will take place at 6:30 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month at the library.

It is pianist Alice Sheu’s second year participating in the Artist Series program. Tonight, she will play will play Bach’s Overture in the French Style and Beethoven’s Eroica Variations.

Sheu said she wanted to revisit Eroica Variations years after she first tried playing it — and failed.

“This particular Beethoven piece, actually it was given to me when I was 12-years-old by my teacher. And, I just couldn’t do it. It was beyond me,” Sheu said.

“It’s a rather difficult piece, but it’s it’s very, very fulfilling.”
MTHP’s Artist Series will run through May. For more information, visit mthp.org.
