Shoesmith Elementary School is partnering with The Sports Factory Foundation to host a basketball tournament in November. The tournament is a fundraiser for extra curricular activities at the school.
“Peace Movement: A 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament” will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, at Kenwood High School, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave.
The school is looking for four-member teams to compete in the event. The entry fee is $100, and there is a cash prize for the winning team.
Sabrina Gates, principal at Shoesmith, 1330 E. 50th St., said the school’s goal is to raise $15,000 to be used for programming in the arts and health and wellness during and after school.
Shoesmith’s partner, The Sports Factory Foundation, has provided free dance lessons for the school’s students for the past three years.
Gates said that last week the school received notification that there would be additional cuts in its state and federal funding, “so, we are taking matters into our own hands.”
Admission to the event is $2 and refreshments will be available for purchase.
