The City of Chicago designated Payne Drive as Honorary Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Way during a special ceremony Thursday morning at The DuSable Museum of African American History.
Payne Drive, from East Rainey Drive to eastbound Midway Plaisance, will be known as Honorary Jean Baptiste Point DuSable Way. Carol L. Adams, president and CEO of DuSable Museum, 740 E. 56th St., Ald. Willie B. Cochran (20th) and Lesly Conde, Consul General of the Republic of Haiti, were in attendance at the ceremony. The choir and drumline from DuSable High School, 4934 S. Wabash Ave., also performed.
DuSable is regarded as the first permanent resident of what became the City of Chicago.
