Artisans 21 will close its doors December 24.

After its second move since being ousted from the previous Harper Court building in 2009 the artists’ collective will shut its doors on Christmas Eve.

Rob Borja, Artisans 21 spokesman, said in a letter that it will close its doors at 5503 1/2 S. Hyde Park Blvd.

Artisans 21 has been giving artists an opportunity to sell their crafts in concert with others’ works for 45 years.

The gallery spent the bulk of its life at the former Harper Court development, where its rent was subsidized based on need. After its old location was closed to make way for the University of Chicago’s new multi-million office and retail tower, Artisans 21 moved to 1373 E. 53rd St., where it paid seven times its previous rent.

In late 2012, it opened its doors on 55th Street.

“We thank everyone for supporting arts through good times and bad. We will never forget your warm perceptive enthusiasm,” said Borja in the letter.

The public is invited to the store’s annual open house from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, and Sunday, Dec. 8.
