Students attending the Hyde Park-based ITwirl Dance Programs will perform a holiday dance recital at 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 14, at Ray Elementary School, 5631 S. Kimbark Ave.
ITwirl, founded in 2012, is a dance school for children ages 2-and-a-half and up and adults. It is based at St. Paul and the Redeemer Church, 4945 S. Dorchester Ave., and runs programs at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, 1362 E. 59th St., and the Ancona School, 4770 S. Dorchester Ave.
“It is a classically based program,” founder Kristi Mosbey said, adding that children must learn ballet before taking on other genres. She described the holiday recital, which will feature contemporary and classical ballet, as an “alternative to The Nutcracker.”
The show will comprise two performances by the The Chicago Contemporary Dance Company, one by program instructor Tinedra Mayo, and six by children. The show is one of two public recitals a year, including another in June.
Registration is open for the programs’ winter 2014 classes. For more information, visit facebook.com/itwirldanceprograms, or contact Mosbey by calling 773-368-4058 or sending an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
