The Kenwood Broncos wrestling team defeated the DuSable Panthers 27-24 in a round-robbin match held at Kenwood Academy, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave., on Saturday afternoon.

The Broncos were excited to kick off their first match of the season and were looking to make a statement against the Panthers.

“Our goal is to finish first in the city this year,” said Kenwood junior wrestler Jake McInnis III.

“We have been preparing for this first match for the longest, and we want to do our best,” McInnis said.

And that they did, thanks to the senior leadership of All-City Football running back Derrick Young, who also wrestles. He inspired his team to dominate in the weight classes of 113, 126, 138, 152, 170, 195 and 285. Young and McInnis swept both of their matches, each quickly pinning his opponent.

Kenwood Wrestling coach Terry Henley explained that the goal for this year’s team is to earn wins through the four categories of pins and take downs, technical falls, majority decisions and most importantly fast pins — which is every coach’s dream.

“I would like to see Derrick dominate this year,” said Henley. “Being it his senior year, I would like for him to go out on top, winning conference, city and the state championship. That would be amazing.”

With the victory, the Broncos begin their season 1-0. Their next match is Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 4:30 p.m.
