A new fast-food restaurant will be opening soon in the space formerly occupied by Hyde Park Gyros, 1368 E 53rd St.

Owner Mo Al-Matarneh is aiming to open his new restaurant, Wingers, by Dec. 28. The veteran entrepreneur also founded the Loop’s Oasis Cafe with owner Suleiman Ahmed in 1998. He says he was attracted to Hyde Park by the neighborhood’s diversity, student population and recent commercial development.

“This will be the testing restaurant,” said Al-Matarneh, who plans on expanding to more locations if all goes well.

Wingers is a concept focusing primarily on chicken wings, burgers and gyros. Customers will order their food at a counter and it will be brought to them at their seats. The restaurant will include seating for 34 and around 20 to 25 items on its menu. Many items will cost $5-6, according to Al-Matarneh.

Hyde Park Gyros closed last August. The lease for Al-Matarneh’s new restaurant was signed last summer, according to Peter Cassel, management director for MAC Properties.
