The Hyde Park Jazz Society is sponsoring a fundraiser for the Hyde Park Jazz Festival.
The Hyde Park Jazz Festival Fundraising Jazz Jam, a concert by veteran festival performers, will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Room 43, 1043 E. 43 St.
“This is actually to help us save for a rainy day fund, if God forbid it rains,” said Hyde Park Jazz Society secretary Judith Stein. “We had wonderful crowds because of our beautiful weather, but any outdoor festival in Chicago has to worry about that.”
Around 40 musicians who have played at the last two festivals will perform, according to Stein, including pianist Willie Pickens and vocalist Dee Alexander. They will be joined by a rhythm section featuring pianist Ron Perrillo, drummer Greg Artry and bassist Dennis Carroll.
The event will pay tribute to pianist John Wright — who performed at the first Hyde Park Jazz Festival in 2007 — with a plaque and remarks.
Stein said the festival and the society chose Wright, “because he’s been such a good friend to us, supporting us both financially and with good ideas.”
