Dozens of people demonstrated in solidarity with Ukrainian protesters early Sunday, across the street from President Barack Obama’s residence at 47th Street and Greenwood Avenue.
The demonstration, which included around as many as 50 people at one point, was held in response to ongoing Ukrainian protests against President Viktor Yanukovych’s pro-Russian policies. One protester held an American flag, while others held placards with messages including “Support Democracy in Ukraine” and “EU Help Us Escape Russian Domination.”
Ukrainian unrest has intensified in recent days, following the lethal shooting of two protesters in the capital of Kiev last Wednesday. Last Thursday, Obama called for an end to violence, saying the U.S. would “continue to consider additional steps, including sanctions” against Ukraine if the situation does not improve.
