Science fiction author Nnedi Okorafor will present the next Despres Memorial Family Lecture at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Blackstone Library, 4904 S. Blackstone Ave.

Okarafor will read from her latest novel “Who Fears Death,” and short story collection, “Kabu Kabu,” at the event, which is being hosted by Friends of Blackstone Library (FOBL). Okorafor will also participate in a Q and A session and book signing.

“I was really excited about being able to bring her because I was aware of her work,” said FOBL President Brenda Sawyer, who first saw Okorafor at the DuSable Museum of African American History.

Sawyer arranged for Okorafor to arrive by reaching out to Maywood, Ill. bookstore Afri-Ware, where her work is on sale. “I think the most outstanding thing about Okorafor is her use of African folklore,” Sawyer said.

The expected publication date of Okorafor’s latest book, “Lagoon,” is April 10.

FOBL will host three more monthly talks through May as part of its Despres Memorial Family Lecture Series.
