Carol Swainson has resigned from her position as the University of Chicago Laboratory (Lab) Middle School principal. Her term will end in June.

In her resignation letter to David Magill, director of the Lab Schools, 1362 E. 59th St., Swainson, who has been the middle school principal since 2012, said she is leaving the school and returning to California to be with her husband and will pursue school leadership opportunities there.

Magill said he is appointing Sandra Bixby as interim Middle School principal.

Bixby, who has been at Lab for seven years, is a science teacher at the private school. She has previous work experience as an administrator and was acting assistant principal of the middle school while Allison Jones was on parental leave.

“I am thankful [for Swainson’s] time with us and wish her the very best in her new pursuits,” Magill said in a letter to parents. “I have every confidence that Sandy and Allison will offer strong leadership during the next school year.”

Magill said the search for a new middle school principal would begin after his successor, Robin Appleby, takes the reigns as the new director of the Lab Schools on July 14 of this year.

Magill said Appleby “is aware of Carol’s departure and will have the chance to assess the needs of the middle school before advertising the position.”
