What the Traveler Saw will be closing at the end of June.

The international goods store has been a popular in the neighborhood since it opened 10 years ago. Owner Laurel Stratford said she would be closing the brick-and-mortar store, 1508 E. 55th St., but not the business.

“I’ve put in 10 good years,” Stratford said. “I’m not abandoning Hyde Park. This is and always will be my home.”

What the Traveler Saw will make appearances in pop-up shops and at outdoor festivals. She said she would be open to collaborating with Harper Court to establish a store on the 5200 block of South Harper Avenue, where her mother’s store Plus sold international clothing when Stratford was growing up.

Moreover Stratford wants to take time to write a book on her family’s history.

“What The Traveler Saw is a culmination of my life as I’ve traveled extensively and lived in many cities and countries for my professional career and personal development. But I always come home to Hyde Park,” Stratford said in a letter to her customers. “I am not closing my business. However, after much thought I’ve decided the time is right to close the store.”

New merchandise is still coming in, she said, and the store will be hosting sales beginning immediately.
