In their final home game of the 2013-2014 Illinois High School Association basketball regular season, the Kenwood Broncos defeated the Lincoln Park Lions 63-61 in front of a packed house of crazed fans on “Senior Night” in Kenwood’s gymnasium at the school, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave.
“This is our last home game as seniors,” said Broncos senior guard Joell Davis.
“I believe it’s very serious [as seniors] to show our fans tonight the importance of teamwork, effort and dedication,” Davis explained.
And that they did, thanks to the contributions and leadership of fellow seniors Steven Dean, Reynard Jones, George Jones, Donovan El and Xavier “Big Shot” Edwards, who combined to outscore the Lions 32-26 in the first half. A buzzer-beater by Davis added to the excitement.
“Usually on senior night guys are amped up which probably led to our slow start in the first half,” said Broncos coach Jim Maley. “But once our guys settled in, they did a better job at moving the ball, defending and playing together in the second half, attributed to the leadership of Joell [Davis].”
And the fans couldn’t agree more, although Davis fell short of extending his scoring streak of 20 or more points in his last five games finishing with 18 points, on 8 of 13 shooting leading his team in scoring and to victory in his last home game of his high school career.
Final Score: Kenwood 63, Lincoln Park 61
The Broncos finished their season on a positive note finishing 15-13 overall, after earning 1 playoff victory against Oak Lawn on Monday and 1 playoff loss against St. Rita on Tuesday.
