Now that the Illinois Primary Election has come to a close parents and community members are gearing up to campaign for spots on local school councils in Chicago Public Schools.

The LSC is an elected group, made up of six parents, two teachers, one non-teaching staff representative, two representatives from the community where the school is located, one student representative (on the high school level) and the principal. The primary responsibilities of LSCs include approving how funds and resources are allocated, developing and monitoring the annual school improvement plan, and evaluating and monitoring the school’s principal.

Several schools in Hyde Park have held or a planning to hold local school council candidate forums. The forums are the community’s chance to learn more about those who aspire to be a part of the LSC.

Kenwood Academy High School, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave., will hold its LSC forum at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 25.

Ray, Bret Harte and Reavis elementary schools held their forums on election night, Tuesday, March 18. Murray Elementary School held its forum on Wednesday, March 19, and Shoesmith and Kozminski elementary schools held their forums on Monday, March 24.

The 2014 LSC election will be held on spring report card pick-up day, Monday, April 7.
