State Rep. Christian Mitchell’s (D-26) campaign has raked in tens of thousands of dollars since election day, including a large donation from a prominent West Coast billionaire.
Illinois Board of Elections records reveal Laurene Powell Jobs, wife of the late Apple Computer CEO Steve Jobs, was reported to have donated $10,000 to Mitchell on the day he defeated primary challenger Jay Travis.
Jobs was unavailable to comment on the matter according to an e-mail from Amy Low, managing director at the Emerson Collective, a non-profit chaired by the philanthropist focused on education, immigration and entrepreneurship.
Jobs is the latest in a group of high-profile Mitchell donors involved in the charter schools movement. In addition to heading the pro-charter Emerson Collective, Jobs sits on the board of the NewSchools Venture Fund, a non-profit investor in charter schools.
Jobs also donated $50,000 to Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s campaign in 2010.
