Marsha’s Music is inviting the community to a family celebration of spring this weekend at Joan’s Studio, 1438 E. 57th St.

The event, dubbed the Earth Day Spring Fam Jam, will feature music, song, dance and crafts beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 26. Participants will sing tunes such as the Native American folk song “The Earth Is Our Mother” and David Mallett’s “Garden Song,” and use their own bottle caps to make castanets decorated like earthworms and caterpillars.

“I’m trying to make people think about making music in their lives,” said Marsha Melsheimer, director of Marsha’s Music, adding that our society tends to passively consume music.

Proceeds from participant donations will go toward paying for classes for students in need of financial assistance.

“It’s an informal scholarship. I just ask that families consider what they can pay over time,” Melsheimer said.

To donate to the scholarship, visit marshasmusic.yourvirtuoso.com or make a contribution at Saturday’s event.
