Murray Elementary School’s 4th through 8th grade students won their divisional matches in the CPS Battle of the Books competition. The 4th to 6th team earned enough points to advance to the Battle of the Books City Championship, where they will compete against the other top 14 schools across the city.
The students were coached by Eileen Holzhauer, librarian, and Kathleen Finke, teacher at Murray, 5335 S. Kenwood Ave.
Each team had six students and one alternate. Seventh to 8th graders were able to choose from 20 books and one e-book including such titles as “The Apothecary,” “Friends with Boys” and “Bamboo People.” The 4th to 6th graders also had the option to choose between 20 books and one e-book with titles such as “Close to Famous,” “A Tale Dark and Grimm” and “The One and Only Ivan.”
Owen O’Connor, 6th grader at Murray, won the Battle of the Books T-shirt design contest. Holzhauer also served as his coach.
The students received a trophy for their school and the 4th to 6th grade team will compete in a live competition May 3 at Disney II Elementary Magnet School, 3815 N. Kedvale Ave.
