The increasing number of traffic snarls on 53rd Street is about to spike as street parking will soon be restricted along 53rd Street, between Lake Park and Blackstone avenues, to make way for a new internet cable being installed by the U. of C. this summer.
The U. of C. expects to install the cable between July 7 and Aug. 5 for its new start-up business incubator, the Chicago Innovation Exchange, located on the second floors of the Schuster Building, 1452 E. 53rd St., and Harper Theater Building, 1463 E. 53rd St.
“As part of those renovations, fiber optic communications cable to connect the Chicago Innovation Exchange to the University’s secure communications and computing resources will be installed underground along the public way between 5235 S. Harper Court and the two buildings,” said James Hennessy, associate vice president of Commercial Real Estate Operations, in a prepared statement.
Construction will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. between Mondays and Fridays, during which two-way traffic will be open and free validated parking will be available at the Harper Court parking garage and lot. There will be no parking restrictions on weekends and after construction hours.
