Work began recently to transform 5701 S. Woodlawn Ave., into the Neubauer Collegium for Culture and Society.
The Meadville Lombard Theological School sold the building in 2009. On the Chicago Historic Resources Survey, the building is listed as orange, meaning it may merit preservation due to their architectural significance or historic features.
The 1933 neo-gothic building will be renovated into the Neubauer Collegium, will provide an environment to allow for collaborative faculty research in the humanities and social sciences.
The university said in a statement the renovation would respect and preserve the historic character of the building and neighborhood. It declined to offer a construction timeline. It expects construction to be finished by spring 2015.
