The Lakeside Quilting Guild is hosting a lecture and trunk show titled “Safari Through African Folklore Embroidery” next week at Treasure Island Foods, 1526 E. 55th St.

Fiber artist Catherine Redford will be a guest speaker at the event, which will include embroidered samples and interactive discussion on South African wildlife, the Ndebele tribe and techniques used for completing an african folklore embroidery design.

Noble said that when quilters work together they often trade information.

“We thought it would be interesting to have Catherine come to talk about her style,” said Merry-Beth Noble, member and spokeswoman for the Lakeside Quilting Guild. “She is from Southern Illinois and will be teaching about African tradition so it will be interesting to share and learn from each other.”

Other highlights of the event include a free raffle. The winner will receive six beginners sewing lessons at Joanne Fabrics’ Roosevelt Road location.

The event is a fundraiser for the guild who gathers every week in the lower level of the grocery store at 55th Street and Lake Park Ave., to generate quilts for charitable causes such as storm victims, service men and women, new families who are a part of the Hyde Park Transitional Housing Project and donating baby quilts to Jackson Park Hospital to low income single mothers. Proceeds will also go to the guest speaker and toward a Lakeside Quilting Guild scholarship that will go to a student who attends the Art Institute of Chicago to study fiber arts.

The group, which has about 30 members, meets every second Tuesday from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Treasure Island on the lower level. Noble said the guild is made up of a diverse group of members that include women and men lawyers, teachers, artists, real estate agents, university staff, nurses and others from myriad backgrounds and welcomes new members.

The event will take place from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 10. The event is open to the public and the cost is $20 for general admission and $15 for guild members.
