Sir and Madame, 1420 E. 53rd St., will close this Sunday to make way for a new pop-up.

The Ukranian Village-based retailer’s Hyde Park pop-up was slated to close in March, according to co-owner and neighborhood resident Autumn Merritt. Instead, it stayed open for nine months before announcing its closure this week.

“It definitely took a lot of people by surprise,” Merritt said, because many assumed the store was permanent.

Merritt says the store was meant to increase exposure to the Sir and Madame brand. “My husband and I, of course, are from Hyde Park, so it was just a good opportunity and the university presented us with the chance to open up in Hyde Park,” said Merritt.

Sir and Madame will move out of its space next week. The Red Balloon, a retailer selling children’s clothing, toys and books in Bucktown and Andersonville, will take its place for six months, beginning this August.
