Boutique clothing pop-up shop Sir and Madame, which closed for good last Sunday after nine months in Hyde Park, will make way for a children’s retailer this August.

A new pop-up store, The Red Balloon, plans to sell children’s clothing, books and toys in the space at 1420 E. 53rd St. for six months. The store already has two other locations, in Bucktown and Andersonville.

The inspiration to open a pop-up here came after searching for a space to host a weeklong sale, said Red Balloon manager Rachel Kirby-Utz.

“We were actually looking for a space to host our warehouse sale and we just came across this location and thought it would be a good opportunity to go ahead and try out Hyde Park,” Utz said.

Hyde Parker Autumn Merritt, who co-owns Sir and Madame with her husband, says she has no plans to open a pop-up in the neighborhood anytime soon. But she says they may return.

“It can be challenging running two locations at one time, just having a small team, but we made it work,” Merritt said. “We know that Hyde Park is definitely an attractive place to be, so we’re not ruling out coming back at all.”
