Open Produce seeking to sell alcohol

Independent grocer Open Produce will apply for a license to sell beer and wine, co-owner Steven Lucy said at a community meeting convened by Ald. Leslie Hairston (5th) last Wednesday.

Open Produce, 1635 E. 55th St., seeks to sell six-packs of craft beers and a selection of wines in the $10 to $20 range through its 2 a.m. closing time. That would make Open Produce the latest non-bar alcohol seller in Hyde Park and the only store to sell alcohol east of the Metra train tracks.

“We don’t think it’s going to change the store that much,” Lucy said. “We don’t think it’s going to change the street or the block that much.”

Open Produce is planning to apply for a license by the end of the August, according to Lucy, who expects to receive one within the next six months. The process requires building inspections as well as a letter of support from Hairston, who committed to one last Wednesday.

Lucy is inviting the community to weigh in by sending an e-mail to info@openproduce.com.
