First Unitarian Church of Chicago, 5650 S. Woodlawn Ave., is seeking donations for The Ujima Village Shelter, 7320 S. Yale Ave., following a fire that ravaged the facility last month.

The shelter, which is one of the few youth shelters located on the South Side in the Englewood neighborhood, opened over a year ago and it serves 24 young people. The Center has insurance but since the cause of the fire is still being determined there has not been settlement of the claim.

First Unitarian has created a registry with specific items needed for the shelter that include bed sheets, bath cloths, blankets and cleaning supplies. To access the registry visit www.signupgenius.com/go/30E094DAEA928A1F94-fire.

The shelter may be able to open a temporary facility if they can get smoke remediation done on the first floor of the facility.

Unity Parenting, which runs the shelter, has set up a GoFundME page to raise $17,500 for a temporary shelter. To make a monetary donation visit www.gofundme.com/fire-at-shelter-for-homeless-youth.
