Award-winning Journalist Jamie Kalven will host a public conversation with the head of the Independent Police Review Authority (IPRA), Sharon Fairley on Wednesday, March 22, to discuss Chicago Police Department (CPD) reform as the CPD transitions to a new police oversight agency.
In the fall of last year, the Chicago City Council passed legislation to create a new police oversight agency, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) to replace the IPRA. The transition from IPRA to COPA is still in progress, and Fairley is leading the change.
Kalven and Fairley will discuss the shift and explore the relationship between the IPRA and COPA as well as the process to other issues in police reform that include the upcoming police union contract negotiations and CPD’s new use of force policy.
The event titled; “Reinventing Police Oversight: A Public Conversation with Sharon Fairley and Jamie Kalven” will be held at Experimental Station, 6100 S. Blackstone Ave. It is free and open to the public. To register for the event visit, https://guestlist.co/events/455376.
