First Unitarian Church donates funds to Strive tutoring program

In its mission to advance social justice, Hyde Park’s First Unitarian Church, 5650 S. Woodlawn Ave., has donated $ 1,777 to Strive Tutoring to support Strive’s free educational and mentoring programs.

For nearly 30 years, volunteer tutors at Strive, 5001 S. Ellis Ave., inside Ellis Avenue Church, have served local children, ages 6-17, who come from limited-income families.

Each Sunday during its 10 a.m. service, First Unitarian takes up a collection to support organizations making positive change.  Most recently, collections have been taken for Black Lives Matter Chicago and for Ujima Village, a youth shelter that recently suffered a fire.

Strive is holding its Annual Spring Benefit on Saturday, April 1, at the Hyde Park Bank, 1525 E. 53rd St. Community residents can purchase tickets and learn more about Strive at stivetutoring.org.
