Volunteers needed for Jane Averill Community Reading Day

To the Editor:

The Hyde Park/Kenwood Community Action Council (HPKCAC) is excited to invite the community to be a part of The Jane Averill Community Reading Day on Friday, October 6, 2017.  We are asking for 80-100 volunteers from the community to spend 20-30 minutes at one of our nine elementary schools in the area (Ariel, Carnegie, Harte, Kozminski, Murray, Ray, Reavis, Robinson, and Shoesmith), reading to small groups of young children, followed by a tour of the school.

The event is named after Jane Averill, the beloved pre-k teacher at Ray, who was also a Hyde Park resident and an active HPKCAC member.  Volunteers will read the children’s book, We All Sing with the Same Voice, a favorite of Jane’s, which celebrates diversity and inclusion.

(The Hyde Park Herald published a story about Jane Averill on December 16, 2015: http://hpherald.com/2015/12/16/jane-averill-remembered-as-a-passionate-teacher/)

The HPKCAC will provide a liaison at each school as a contact person, who will contact volunteers with details about the time and location.  It is our hope that we will recruit community members beyond those folks who are already volunteering in the schools, but all volunteers are welcome!  We are very excited that 57th Street Books is partnering with us to collect the donations to cover the $2500 cost of providing each child who is read to that day with a copy of the book, and to order the books for us once we have enough donations.

We look forward to launching this community-wide reading event, celebrating all the diversity around us, supporting literacy among our youngest, and fostering further ties between our schools and our community members.  Please, be a part of this mission through volunteering and/or donating, and share this information widely!
