Chicago Police are conducting a death investigation after a fire at an apartment building in the 5400 block of South Cornell Ave., on Thursday, Dec. 7.
Police said a 68-year-old woman was found dead in her apartment.
The Chicago Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the hallway of the apartment building and arrived on the scene just before 5 a.m. Thursday morning.
Emergency responders forced the woman’s apartment door open in the building, where they found her next to the couch, according to Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford.
The fire began on the couch, and it was extinguished within half an hour according to reports.
The woman has not yet been identified.
