Bonne Sante Health Foods, 1512 E 53rd St.
When I’m hungry and on the run, whether its on my way to intern at the Herald, to work, or in between classes, I hate being limited to greasy fast food or boring submarine sandwiches. I’m always on the lookout for fast, healthy, vegetarian meals that won’t break the bank. Bonne Sante Health Foods’, 1512 E. 53rd St. juice bar and deli satisfy these criteria.
Bonne Sante has attracted Hyde Parkers, both “young and old, vegetarian and nonvegetarian, athletic and non-athletic,” to their sandwiches, salads, wraps and entreesmade fresh in store and brought in from Chicago-based companies Soul Gourmet and Soul Vegan, according to the store’s cashier, Gina.Gallery not found. In addition to groceries, household items, vitamins and supplements, and the deli section, Bonne Sante also serves juice at the bar.
After browsing through all the deli items offered, I sat down at the store’s sunny outdoor patio with a Grilled Southwest Tofu Wrap and a chilled ThéBü kombucha (sparkling fermented tea). For less than $9.00 total, I enjoyed the vegan organic wrap filled with tofu, black beans, corn, peppers, barbeque sauce and spices and the refreshing kombucha.
Vegan/vegetarian chef David, gives “mad power to the plant,” when making “earth-friendly, healing food.” David’s love for cooking and food is apparent in Bonne Sante’s products. The wrap was a great alternative to other fast foods. However, I believe that Bonne Sante’s lunchtime offerings would benefit from more hot foods and an espresso machine.
