How do you measure love? Hyde Parker (and President of the United States) Barack Obama doesn’t need a expert to answer that question. He can head over to 53rd and Dorchester, where his love for his wife Michelle Obama can be measured in pounds. The “Obama Kissing Rock” monument weighs in at 3,000 pounds (1.5 tons of love!).
Commemorating Obama’s love for the first lady, a granite boulder was erected in 2012 marking the spot of their first kiss outside of ice cream shop Baskin-Robbins.
While some believe that the best gifts come in small packages, the owners of Dorchester Commons who commissioned the boulder thought otherwise.
Inscribed on the rock is a quote taken from “O,” The Oprah Magazine, in an interview with Obama. “On our first date, I treated her to the finest ice cream Baskin-Robbins had to offer, our dinner table doubling as the curb. I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate”
In addition to Obama’s barbershop and the sad leftovers of Walgreen’s Obama shrine, tourists can add the charming and hefty rock to their Obama Watch itineraries.
