Shoreland is landmarked

The Shoreland Hotel, 5454 S. Shore Dr., has been named a landmark by the City Council. Currently being rehabbed to make space for rental apartments, the hotel was once host to Amelia Earhart and Elvis Presley, among other notables.

After World War II, when apartment-hotel renters — who provided a source of longer-term business for the hotel — became scarce, the Shoreland closed its doors. Before its current rehabilitation, it served as student and staff housing for the University of Chicago. It is now owned by Antheus Capital.

The status protects the building from demolition or “significant alteration” and provides tax benefits, according to a press release from the city.
