Local parks win playground equipment competition

Five Hyde Park area playgrounds will receive new equipment in the next year.

The first two playgrounds, at Jackson Park, 5625 S. Stony Island Ave., near the field house, and Bessie Coleman Park, 5445 S. Drexel Ave., will have new playgrounds installed after winning the first round of the Chicago Plays! competition administered by Friends of the Parks (FOTP).

The new equipment should be installed by the fall. By spring 2014, Chrysalis Tot Lot, 5630 S. Stony Island Ave., and the Harold Washington Play Lot, 5200 S. Hyde Park Blvd., will benefit from new playgrounds.

The funding for each project comes from the Chicago Park District’s capital budget.

Stone said once playgrounds are installed community groups will have the opportunity to install wood chips and put sweat equity into each park.

“They’re just giving back to our parks,” Maria Stone, of FOTP, said. “You’ll know that there’s somebody watching out for those parks and that they’ll be taken care of.”
