Kenwood Broncos fall short in Urban Prep match

In the IHSA Football Game of The Week, the Kenwood Academy Broncos (2-4) fell to the Englewood Urban Prep Lions (3-3), 32-12 on Saturday afternoon at Gately Stadium, host of Urban Prep’s Home Coming Week.

Both teams entered conference play (Windy City) with a 2-1 record, knowing that with a win, one could leap frog the other.

Before kickoff, Head Coach Darnell Jones of Kenwood Academy would emphasize the importance of his team getting off to a great start.

“They’re a physical team,” said Jones on the style of play of Englewood-Urban Prep.

“I explained to my players the importance of playing a fundamentally sound, mistake-free football game,” Jones said.

Jones felt that if the Broncos and his third ranked (third overall in Chicago Public League Football) quarterback Romell Fields could limit their mistakes on both sides of the ball, that his teams athleticism and speed would be enough to lead them to victory. But to every coach’s game plan there’s a counter from the opposing team. The Lions would dominate the first half scoring on both offense (2 touchdowns, 40-yard touchdown run, 6-yard touchdown run, by No. 4, runningback Dashawn Cribbs) and defense (22-yard fumble return for a touchdown) giving Urban Prep a commanding 24-6 lead at the half.

In the second half, penalties would paralyze the Broncos as they were flagged on several straight possessions for infractions in the neutral zone, bringing an end to their comeback hopes and an awesome performance by runningback Derrick Young, who rushed for nearly 100-yards in the first half but was sidelined with an injured shoulder.

Final Score: Kenwood Academy 12, Englewood-Urban Prep 32
