A new art exhibit featuring paintings by local artists Sandra Morrissey and Emily Bennett is on display through the month at Open Produce, 1635 E. 55th St.

Morrissey, a Hyde Park resident, focuses her work on landscape paintings inspired by the Atlantic Ocean and Lake Michigan. She uses a playful style of paint splatter and swirls to give her work energy. “I see sailboats all the time when I’m walking on the Point,” said Morrissey.

Chicago resident Bennett uses cel-vinyl paint to portray animated, comical animals enjoying decadent treats and snacks. “I just like to paint things that are cute and make me happy,” said Bennett, who draws her inspiration from cartoons and her two beloved cats. Bennett also uses other media in her art, such as clay figures and plush toys that are also on display.

According to Open Produce employee Sean Nicholson, beginning in January 2014, the store will feature work by art students at Kenwood Academy, 5015 S. Blackstone Ave. Morrissey and Bennett’s work is on display from Dec. 5 through the end of the month.
