Local friends to history

The Hyde Park Historical Society (HPHS) has announced the 2014 winners of its Paul Cornell, Marian and Leon Despres Preservation and Jean Block Book awards, which will be presented at its annual dinner on Feb. 22 at the Quadrangle Club, 1155 E. 57th St.

This year’s Paul Cornell Award winners are: Seth and Kristin Flanders, for their gift to the HPHS of an extensive collection of artifacts and memorabilia from Seth’s family including Hyde Park High School yearbooks from 1895 to 1897 and a separate collection of documents and artifacts from the Pullman community of the 1880s, and St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 5472 S. Kimbark Ave., for its service to the community including educational programs about church architecture and artwork, historical preservation and local service.

The 2014 Marian and Leon Despres Preservation Awards winners are: MAC Property Management, for the rehabilitation and adaptive reuse as residential rental apartments of the historic and landmarked Shoreland Hotel building at 5454 S. South Shore Dr.; and the University of Chicago, for the rehabilitation of the Harper Theater buildings at 5234-40 S. Harper Ave. and 1453-66 E. 53rd St.

The Jean Block Book Award will be awarded to Susan O’Connor Davis, for her newly published book, “Chicago’s Historic Hyde Park.”

The society’s highest honor, the Presidential Award, will be given to Richardson and Janice Spofford for their many years of service to the Hyde Park Historical Society and for the recent restoration of their historic 18-room Kenwood home, designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw and built in 1910 for the industrialist Thomas E. Wilson, of Wilson Meat Packing and Wilson Sporting Goods.
