Novelty pizza shop closes

Homemade Pizza closed its doors suddenly at all of its locations on May 30, including its Hyde Park store at 1546 E. 55th St.

The closing was one of more than 20 for Chicago-based Homemade Pizza, which began selling customers pre-made pies to cook at home in 1997. Though the company released no official statement on the matter, CIO Steve Bringas confirmed it was out of business.

The company did not inform its Hyde Park landlord, the University of Chicago, that its store here would be closing, according to an e-mail from Calmetta Coleman, director of communications for Civic Engagement.

“While the University will be seeking a new tenant to fill the unexpected vacancy, no timing has been set to have the space filled,” Coleman said.
