The Hyde Park-Kenwood Community Conference voted unanimously last month to request that the City renovate the play equipment at Houston Playground Park, 5001 S. Cottage Grove Ave.

Parks Committee co-chair McCurry, who is part of a team surveying local parks for HP-K CC, told the conference the playground is used by kids at Reavis Elementary, 834 E. 50th St.

She has requested online that the City include it on its list of 2016 playground renovations.

“This is a place where kids can get hurt, and so the faster we can get this fixed, the fewer kids will get hurt,” said McCurry, who also called for an advisory council at the park.

HP-K CC Parks Committee member Timika Hoffman-Zoller added that the park’s fountain, lights and basketball court are in good condition, but that its swings are rusty with gang graffiti and benches are missing slats.

“It’s actually a nice park,” Hoffman-Zoller said. “But it does need new play equipment — the play equipment is really poor.”

The conference’s survey of local parks will be complete by next month’s HP-K CC meeting, according to McCurry, which will take place at 7 p.m. on Feb. 8 at the basement of Treasure Island, 1526 E. 55th St.
